Sarah and John Rummage attended the dedication of the Arthur Schaefer School at Grace Home #2, near Vizianagarem, India on December 6, 2007. They traveled with Colette and Justin Schaefer who were guests of honor at the school named for their grandfather. Dr. Gopala Raju, administrator of the school and the home, and Roger Wiemers from the U. S. met them at the airport and welcomed them to the city. Their plane, which should have landed in the afternoon, was a couple of hours late and it was dark when they finally arrived at the school. They were all touched by the sight of the children waiting patiently for them as they entered the grounds of the school. Their bright smiles and hand-made signs of ‘Welcome’ made John and Sarah and Colette and Justin feel very humble and grateful for their expressions of love. Mrs. Joyce Raju and other honored guests also welcomed them. All were asked to say a few words at the dedication. One meaningful thing Colette said to the group was a statement from Mother Teresa: “You may not be able to do great things, but you can do small things with great love.” During the next few days, the children and the family of Dr. Raju did many small things with great love. The children moved the chairs when the group would go from the court yard to inside. They would find the owner of shoes which were left outside a door. They brought food and water. They talked and smiled. They were always respectful and loving. Members of the Raju family were exceptional hosts. The group’s wish was their command. For instance, Dr. Raju noticed that they were losing their voices, perhaps from the dust, perhaps from riding in the cool night air a few days before at the Taj Mahal and Jaipur, India. He brought throat lozenges which brought back their voices. They happened to mention that they like cashews; he made a phone call to get cashews for the group. Vijay and Rani, his son and daughter, took them to a fishing village typical of the villages where the tsunami of 2004 hit in India. The hospitality went on and on. There are too many things to mention, and John, Sarah, Colette and Justin will never forget them. The group visited the children at school in their classrooms. They are good students and are enjoying the new school facility. They recited English words which they have learned to spell. The school still needs finishing touches, such as some doors and windows and furniture, and the library needs books. Founding Family will stay in touch and possibly visit again and communicate to our donors to help provide funds for the school’s ongoing needs. | ||
